Isaiah 12:1-6 “God Be in Me” 20161113

godbeinmyhead

You will say in that day: I will give thanks to you, O LORD, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, and you comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the LORD GOD is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. [NRSV]

We have collectively experienced a physical, emotions, spiritual and social wrenching that has come to a crescendo this week.

Some of the most hateful, intolerant and hard-hearted words have been spoken about the election in the past seven days.

  • Some have been riding on a seemingly, unending roller coaster that did not stop where it started.
  • Others are grieving, spiraling, and building a strong case of depression
  • while others have begun acting out of anger, which never leaders to safety, tolerance, and peace.
  • Still others have remained silent and afraid to speak, for fear of ridicule.

It is time for us to HEAR the words of God’s prophet.

  • God is my salvation.
  • I will trust and not be afraid
  • The Lord is my strength
  • With Joy, draw water from the well of salvation.
  • Give Thanks to the Lord, call his name, make his deeds known among the nations.
  • Proclaim and exalt God’s name.
  • Sing Praise to the Lord,
  • Tell the world  how glorious God is,
  • Shout aloud and sing for Joy, God is with us.

It is time for us to SHARE the words of God’s prophet.

  • Salvation is found in God, not our government
  • Trust God and do not be afraid
  • Find your strength in the Lord
  • Draw on God’s joy when yours is missing
  • This is a great time to look for and give witness to God in the world.
  • Sing praises to God to remind us who leads this world
  • Talk of good that God has done for us and the good God will do through us
  • Shout loud and Sing the Good News: God is with us.

It is time for us to LIVE the words of God’s prophet.

  • Our neighbors are divided and God is counting on us to salvation
  • There are people in our workplaces that have lost truth and trust,
  • Don’t ignore fears, but don’t be turned to anger and wrath, Find strength in God, not politics.
  • Make a withdrawal from God’s account when ours is empty or draining.
  • When we are divided is the clearest time to all move toward God.
  • Sing praise to remind ourselves and others the God is speaking through us all.
  • Talk of Good instead of evil. Speak of hope that is to be revealed.
  • Shout, don’t keep quiet, God is with us. God will save us. God will guide us

The Alternative is grim:

  • Continue to hold government higher than God and we will surely fall apart.
  • Count on our political powers to provide for every need and we have no need for God
  • Find our strengths in our efforts, our wealth, our correct thinking, and our feelings and they will all fail
  • Sing praises that are only pleasing and comforting and we will be alone
  • Only talk about our point of view, our goodness, and correct thinking and we will see only ourselves
  • Keep quiet about God and God will speak through someone else who will follow, trust and love.

Lord have mercy on me a sinner.

Lord have mercy on our nation and all the nations, for we are all sinners.

God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;
God be at mine end, and at my departing.

Amos 8.1-12 “Final Fruit-Baskets?” 202160717 RSUMC

fruitbasketThis is what the Lord God showed me—a basket of summer fruit. He said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me, “The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again pass them by. The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day,” says the Lord God; “the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in every place. Be silent!” Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, “When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the Sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat.” The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt? On that day, says the Lord God, I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight. I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day. The time is surely coming, says the Lord God, when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it. [NRSV]

Sackcloth, baldness, morning only child, a bitter day.

  • Sackcloth, baldness and morning, oh my!
  • Sackcloth, baldness and morning, oh my!
  • Sackcloth, baldness and morning, oh my!
  • •    Sackcloth: A sign of sinfulness
    •    Baldness: A sign of unhealthiness
    •    Morning an Only Child: Grief for this generation and the next
    •    Bitter Day: A sign of our separation from God.

Sending a famine instead of a fruit basket.

Not a famine of land, bread or thirst
But a famine of HEARING the words of the Lord.
God’s bringing a basket that we fill find as empty.
•    If I bring fruit every day, and no one takes even a bite, it will eventually spoil
•    If I bring healthy snacks and no one even samples, we will eventually starve
•    If I bring hope for this generation and the next and no one trusts and believes,  we have nothing left.

The basket is full of unwanted, un-tasted, un-sampled, un-digested, un-used nourishment: It lies in waste (or lingers in our waists)

Seeking and not finding, Knocking and nothing opening, Asking and receiving none.

The question of the day is
how long will the famine take?
How many attacks can we stand?
How many bodies left on the ground?
How many reports of violence before we are numb?

Where is the fruit basket?

•    The basket of milk and honey?
•    The basket of power and grace?
•    The basket of truth and certainty?
•    The basket of goodness and peace?

We want that fruit basket, then
1.    Why not eat it when it is placed in front of you?
2.    Why wait until there are famine and ruin?

Today is the day for feasting on the Word of God.

•    Open and read it
•    Read and share it
•    Share and sing it
•    Sing and Teach it
•    Teach and live it
•    Live it and find the God, who loves us, living with us, still.

Galatians 3.23-29 The MOST Troubling Text 20160619 RSUMC

unisexclothesNow before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore, the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian,  for, in Christ Jesus, you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise. [NRSV]

Who knew Gene Roddenberry was as a fan of Galatians?

The Star Trek cultural iconic uniforms that allow for individuals to be known for their role in the community by the color of their uniform not matter their origin, citizenship, nor gender.

What if the clothes Christ places on us, rather than the garments and cultural markers we self-define one another?

  • What if those who wore blue were known as healers.
  • Teachers, Grower and Designers in Green
  • Administrators and Safety persons in Golden Rod
  • Builders, Helpers, Support persons in Red
  • Orange for those who Harvest and celebrate
  • White for those who are wisdom and faith-sharers
  • Black for those who comfort and counsel
  • Brown..

Known by the clothes of Christ.

  • Some would work to discover what Jesus wore and tried to replicate first-century apparel. but that would miss the mark of the text.
  • Some would be looking at the blended areas of overlap where roles cross in different situations and contexts.
  • Some would not like the color assigned and protest

But think for a moment, what if we wore the gifts, graces, ministries and presence of Christ as we wear our clothes.

It surprises me that the first question that people ask about ‘my/our’ church is about our dress code. Not that we have a formal dress code, most folks would want folks to be ‘in’ the fellowship with us no matter what close they might wear.

But we follow that with a few qualifications, even if we don’t say them aloud:

You don’t have to wear a coat and tie or dress, just be clean and neat.

We live in a time when folks have extremes about clothes, fashion is a billion dollar industry for nearly every price point of our society.

We also have a culture that would rather buy or receive something new than wash and care for the clothes we have. How does this culture connect with our being clothed by Christ.

One Time Use for Christ

  • We wear difference clothes for different occasions.
    • Jesus Clothes us for eternity.
  • We wear something for a season
    • Jesus Clothes us for eternity
  • We wear something until we wear it out or outgrow it or tired of it.
    • Jesus Clothes us for eternity
  • We wear something so people will respond to us in a certain way.
    • Jesus Clothes us for God’s Work
  • We wear something to wear to work
    • Jesus empties himself and wants to work through us
  • We judge and value by what we wear
    • Jesus loves who we are with nothing to show

Walter Wangeren Jr’s Rag Man short story invites us to allow Christ to clothe and mark us for service.

People will misuse this passage from Galatians to say that whatever group society might divide and define us is acceptable, but a closer listen to the whole message of Paul’s letter and his message about Christ defining us.

Look in the Jesus Mirror: Who does Jesus See “in Me?”

Does Jesus see me as Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female, tall or short, etc. Jesus sees me as I am, and no matter how the world defines me, Jesus sees me as:

  • Worthy of his life
  • Worthy of his grace
  • Worthy of his ministry
  • Worthy of his service
  • Worthy of his praise
  • Worthy of his devotion

The things that we use to limit and divide, Jesus knows, Jesus is not blind, but Jesus sees in us far more than we might see in ourselves.

Paul’s invitation is to see each other as Christ see us

  • see each other as Christ sees
  • see the value Christ sees in us
  • love the persons Christ sees in us and in one another.

Luke 13.31-35 Casting Evil and Curing Relationships 20160221 RSUMC

JesusGang At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”  He said to them, “Go and tell that fox for me, “Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”  [NRSV]
Jesus Agenda: Casting out evil, Curing the broken, and finishing his work on the third day.

A fore telling of Jesus’ arrest, conviction and crucifixion are addressed by the disciples and Jesus.Jesus is talking back. Calling Herod by his action, a fox, cunning, callus and calculated. Skills of self preservation for the fox. Jesus’ mission, in Luke’s Gospel, requires him to be back in Jerusalem, positioned for the crucifixion. The Agenda cannot be stopped by Herod or any evil. But that will not stop evil things from happening.KEY:

God’s presence cannot be taking away, but neither are we to expect evil to disappear in the world.Prophet’s Job is Seldom Appreciated.

Jesus points to the difficult task of being a prophet. The Prophet says nothing new. The prophet reminds us of the rails that our collective train should be running. The Prophet reminds us that God desires up to be with God.Jesus is more than any prophet. Jesus is God showing up first hand, the real deal, the actual.Jesus’s lament is how the necessary role of the prophet has never been without attack and often takes one’s life.We have at least two prophetic voices for our capital city:

I would suggest that our two leading political candidates (S&T) have tapped into the telling the people what the want to be reminded of, but their trains are running in opposing directions. Neither of them claim to be God’s prophets, but folks are desperate for a prophet and will follow until the find the prophet’s flaws or the prophet’s message becomes too personal. Mud-Slinging Campaign: (Interesting to hear from Jesus and John the Baptizer) Herod, was the secular leaders and he was a ‘fox’. The Sanhedrin were the religious leaders and they were a brood of vipers.  God desires us to be together. There is a VERY powerful moment of self-disclosure and God’s heart being revealed in these words of Jesus outside of Jerusalem:The Mother Hen and her brood: How I wish my chicks would trust me. (Not just after they are in trouble, not after they are lost to evil, not just when faced with their own mortality, BUT when there was time to “walk together in the garden”) Remember the relationship with Adam and Eve, where God would walk and talk with them face-to-face, and explore the garden along side with them (Gen 3.8)The Prophets role is to remind God’s people of the relationship of Good and Evil. Helping folks remember what side of the fence they are too live.

Are we people who put God first? Are we a people who put God 2nd or third or last? Are we people who honor our parents and their generation? Are we a people who lie, cheat, steal and murder? Are we people who choose our own agenda or God’s?Are we people who hunger and thirst to be correct or forgivenAre we people who satisfied with God or we want more? Are we people who listen to snakes and foxes? Are we people who will call out what it is evil, broken and diseased? Are we people who will turn to God or Government to define us?

These are the prophet’s questions: What are our answers? The Declaration:Blessed are those who come in the name of the Lord.

John 18.33-38 “The God’s Truth: Redundancy” 20151115 RSUMC

TruthPilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” 34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” 35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?” 36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.” 37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” 38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. [NRSV]

This Word is not my home, Albert Brumley, 1937  (11am)

This world is not my home, I’m just a-passing through. My treasures are laid up, Somewhere beyond the blue.
The angels beckon me, From heaven’s open door, And I can’t feel at home In this world anymore.
Oh Lord, you know, I have no friend like you, If heaven’s not my home, Then Lord what will I do.
I have a loving mother, Just up in Glory land, And I don’t expect to stop, Until I shake her hand.
She’s waiting now for me, In heaven’s open door, And I can’t feel at home, In this world anymore.
Oh Lord, you know, I have no friend like you, If heaven’s not my home, Then Lord what will I do.
Just over in Glory land, We’ll live eternally, The saints on every hand, Are shouting victory.
Their songs of sweetest praise, Drift back from heaven’s shore, And I can’t feel at home, In this world anymore.

Citizenship 101
King of kings and Lord of Lords reigns a spiritual world that is not measurable by the laws of physics and science.
Dual Citizenship
We are a physically citizen of the USA

We are the spiritual citizen of the Kingdom of God

The Micro-nation   (9am)

Are you not tired of politics fighting. No matter the side of the fence you choose to stand, we are over-loaded with a constant fight to destroy one another. The heart ache is based in the passions that drive our beliefs.

— The PROBLEM: If everyone would value what “I” value then there would be peace and tranquility.

There are times I’d like to make my own little nation. Tiny House phenomenon, there is a Micro Nation phenomenon.

The problem with setting up your back yard as your own country is that becomes a legal threat against the United States. It might be all in our imagination but if everyone seceded one Saturday afternoon, stopped paying taxes, stopped voting, ignored the laws, rules and regulations we disagree, the imaginary idea of our own nations would corrupt the order of our real nation.

The result would be an increase of division and a decrease of safety and peace. Most certainly, there would be more politics, WHY? Because we cannot live without each other.
Politics in Church

Sanhedrin, temple authority board/council, were threatened by Jesus, because of his popularity with the crowds.
They use the Roman politics to keep their power and support of the populace.
–Rather than talk with your neighbor you get the home owners association to act
–Rather than question if you are right or wrong, find a legal technicality to call the police or better yet sue someone.
–Find the flaw in your opponent and exploit them with the system.
–Pass the dirty job to someone other than yourself AND you get what you want.

There are valid times for legal resolutions, but not the place to start.
School board, city Council, County commissioners, Senator and representatives, presidents, emperors as well as you and me.

To the Heart of the Solution is to Define and claim: Where is my primary citizenship?

The Conversation in the text
Governor Pilate has heard of Jesus. They have a political discussion about truth.
“Ok Jesus, they are charging you with challenging the authority of Caesar,

Are you a king?”
Are you guilty of the charges

Jesus sounds a bit vague, unclear, not straightforward. “You have answered correctly in saying, “You are a king.”

Pilate races through his memory, I asked the question. I didn’t make a statement. Grrr.

Ok, Jesus, what is the truth?

Truth
We live in an age of enlighten truth, shaped by the scientific method and defined by person accent/believe and/or popular opinion and personal offense.

Is it true that someone on some college campus call a student a derogatory name? Yes.

Therefore, the entire school has a fundamental problem with racism and the leaders have to be fired.

There is a double standard

Is it true that there are more unemployed and under-employed people today compared to eight years ago? Yes it is true.

Therefore, the entire economic system has fundamental problems with economics and the leaders have to be fired.

Oh, but that not the same at all.

Jesus is saying something that was just as unpopular to Governor Deal, as it was to Governor Pilate then.

Truth is not a variable

Truth is not an opinion

Truth is not our lump of metallic ore to shape and model into our own idol.

It’s one or the other: Truth in the eyes of the beholder VS. Truth is in God!’s will.

It might the atheists right to deny God, but their disbelief doesn’t negate God’s existence and patience with them.

Using the truth, and our understanding for person or corporate political gain is the issue

If I take a standard ruler and saw off 2 inches and say that new length s a foot. Is that the truth.

The valued the dollar changes daily.  Isn’t that crazy?

Pilate passes the buck on Truth, Yet Speaks the Truth.

“I find no fault, you deal with your difference.”

A good leader is not going to pass the buck.

A good leader helps lift of the truth and stands behind that standard.

Independent of offense, popularity or opinion.

So where is our Truth?

If political majority is your guiding principles, Who made the majority of the people?

If political principle is your guiding passion, Who made of the network of the mind that things of better ways for folks to work together?

If you want everyone to be completely free to choose for themselves their own destiny? Who created freedom?

If you want to be led by the heart and compassion, Who are we called to forgive first? Those who think like we do, or our enemies?

If you want science and physics as your truth, who made the heavens and the earth?, who started the bang and ordered the science?

If you and I want to find the common ground, The Truth is God.

Even for those who deny God’s reality. God is big, tough and grace-filled enough to be TRUTH with Patience for us to trust that truth.

Jesus is the truth.

This is who were are. The people who believe above all else that God has always wanted to be in love and in relationship with us

Jesus is the, in the flesh example of God’s example and the means by which bridges us to God.

God’s Spirit continues to be reached out to us, drawing, inviting and welcoming the conversation.

Remember this if nothing else. You can talk about politics with God, but your can’t talk about God without getting to the truth of politics. We are living in God’s garden and playground.
