Matthew 6:1-9 Love is In the Air JUMC 20122012:0900

“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 “And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 6 But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Why does a guy give a girl a valentine gift? If you listen to the commercials for strawberries, flowers, and teddy bears the exchange is more the guy than the girl. The tradition of valentine comes out of the Martyrdom of St Valentine who would not give up his Christian faith when challenged by the Roman Emperor Claudius II.

Someone laying down his or her life for the faith and life of others… Not only is it a Christ-like example it begs what do chocolates and cards have to do with real love.

  • A parent does not feed his or her children because they want them to love and appreciate them as a parent. The parent feeds their children because they love them.
  • A firefighter does not go into a burning building because they are a show off, the go because they trust their team, equipment and training to save lives.
  • A solid waste collection engineer does not ride on the back of big smelly truck because they love the outdoors nor carrying our trash, it is his or her job, the livelihood for their family, homes, and living.

Nugget: Showing love for the sake of loving rather: for show, approval, or your self.

ACTION: When there are so many opportunities to show our love, in all the different ways we express love… Let our words and actions be genuine and not for show, nor for us.
