Luke 24.44-53 Assension Sunday “Power Ties” BRUMC 50162010 Graduation Sunday

44 Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." 50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God. (NRSV)

Stay in the City until you are Clothed with Power:

If you are in the city, fashion gurus say you should not wear a brown suit with brown shoes. That would be too casual for urban business attire.

Some would say not to wear white before Memorial Day… Here is the clarification: White shoes, white sport coat, are traditionally not worn south of the Mason/Dixion. I’m not sure a white belt is been in fashion for forty years unless you wear all three and you bought them in the seventies, then I think its ok.

Probably the easiest and most well know fashion tip for men is the power tie. In the fifties the power tie was thin and black. In the 70s it was wide and wild. In the 80’s it was red. In the 90s it was yellow. Now there are two conflicting schools of thought about the power tie: Solid blue/red on white shirt vs. a colorful print on a colorful printed shirt in contrasting colors. Grrr.

That’s not easy, and honestly, here in the lovely steaming spring humidity of thunderstorms I would rather not wear a tie at all. In all the congregations I have previously served..

Does it matter how we dress. Unfortunately guys, while we don’t want to think it matters, it does make a difference. But even more important than finding the right tie to make the right impression: is something that applies to us all.

File?id=dgr9prh9_283dcnxq8gt_bSome would say, we have to put on "The whole armor of God…" (Eph. 6.10-17)
But these are things that we might put on ourselves.

Jesus speaks of how God dresses us for faithful Christian Living..

Be clothes in the power of the Spirit of God.

Before you put on your deodorant, skivies, wig or teeth.. be clothed by God, with God’s Spirit.

What does that mean? How do we do that?

1) First instruction was to Remain in the City.. Stay near the temple. Sty near worship and Christian fellowship, even in the presence of fear or temptation.

2) Be Clothed.. God’s action, not ours. Allow God to bless, enable, equip, train, cover us.

3) Receive God’s Power, not our power, God’s power.

To the Graduates: You are stepping out of home and familiar into new challenges: You take with you knowledge, dreams and treasures.. Take you trust in Jesus Christ and let that be your foundation, your core class, you witness to the world.. Allow the Power God desires to give you, be your hope, promise and strength and assurance as you mature your mind and experience, first allow God’s Spirit to mature your spirit.

To the rest of us: Stay near the fellowship and teaching, allow God to work, receive God’s Power.. trust it first, and always over our own or the worlds.

How… come back next Sunday for Pentecost… and hear how..
