1 Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, 2 he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." 5 Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." 6 When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" 9 For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people." 11 When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.
The beach… what is it like? Salty? Breezy? Sandy? Play or Work?
For some it is work, fishy, cold, freezing, and far from a place of retreat.
In a time of failure and disappointment Jesus meets would be disciples
They had fished all night,
The nets had been cleaned, mended and put away
It was now morning and the fish would be on the move.
According to Peter the timing is not right.
The circumstances were not right.
The moment was tried and over.
Jesus calls for them to go out into the deep.
The deep things.. NOT the weather, NOT the scores, NOT the gossip
Fears, Failures, Sadness, Pain, Guilt, Shame, etc.
Who can help us when we are in too deep?
Out of the deep, comes the catch of a lifetime.
Peter, James, John and Zebedee had never had this!
Some take this as a lesson in Abundance or personal wealth.
If that were the point, the disciples would not leave their nets.
The point is about being personally confronted by Jesus Christ.
They called for the others to come help, for the catch is so great
The nets were beginning to break..
More than they could handle, alone
More than their tools/talents could manage.
So much THEY were about to sink.
There is a sinking of the self, in the being CAUGHT UP in Christ.
Peter saw it.
Peter got it.
His response was: GET AWAY FROM ME.
His self-awareness in the glory of Christ shows our sinfulness.
Our tendency is to run from the truth.
We avoid the hurt, disappointment, grief, and faults…
Jesus calls us in these very low moments to the highest work.
To be a disciple, is to be a follower of Christ.
To be a follower, means that our self sinks into the sea of Christ.
Our boat is intact, but clear of our limitations
Clear of Christ’s carrying us.
From now on, you will use the skills that you already know to reach
People.. for Jesus Christ.
ACTION PLAN: The next time you have urge to say NO,
What will it take to say, I will follow? Jesus knows the way, trust him.
