15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. 17 But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.
18 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand.
22 For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, 23 but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25a Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
This weekend many people will be celebrating Independence Day in a variety of ways. Some people travel to see loved ones, and others just stay home with the family. Some people will shoot fireworks, while others enjoy just watching them go off.
We celebrate this holiday because of what happened in 1776. 13 colonies and 56 representatives met with congress and declared that no longer was America adjoined to Mother Europe, and no longer did we need to answer to her.
The second sentence of the Declaration of Independence says:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
225 years later we still enjoy the freedom that the Declaration of Independence created for us: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
1. Life – Did you know that some people do not enjoy living?
– Jesus says in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth and the LIFE!
– We have life insurance, life jacket, life time guarantees, life time memberships, But at what cost is our life given to us to live?
2. Liberty – Liberty is freedom.
– We live in a free enterprise system, a free market, we give free will offerings, and a free lunch, free samples, free checking, free to worship, at what cost?
Gal 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
3. The Pursuit of Happiness – Let’s look at what the Bible says about Happiness:
Job:5:17: Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects: therefore trust God’s teaching and truth. Ps:144:15: Happy are the people, whose God is the LORD.
James:5:11: Behold, happy are those who endure in faith.
1Pt:3:14: But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye:
Happy in the moment vs. Happy in the every day, forevermore.
What is the cost of being happy in the moment with out joy or peace
beyond the moment?
What of those whom we honored today, stood by and allowed others to lead?
What of those who me remember today, thought of themselves over the whole?
LIFE is more than existence, LIBERTY is more than an opportunity, HAPPINESS is more than I can persude myself to enjoy in this day.
LIFE is living in Christ giving witness to the light that shine through me
LIBERTY is the responsibility to live as if Christ has actually died for me to live
HAPPINESS is choosing to live my life for Christ who gives me strength, joy, peace and love.
