The Business of Making Disciples

January 27, 2008         The Business of Making Disciples

12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee.  13 He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles  16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.”  17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”  18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen.  19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.”  20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.  21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.  22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.  23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

McDonalds’ is in the business of selling food fast and cheaply, at a profit.

Wal-Mart is in the business of selling many good as cheaply, at a profit.

Wall Street is in the business of selling high and buying low, at a profit.

The church is a business, it’s business is calling, teachings, and sending: DISCIPLES

What is our business, (Blue Ridge UMC?)

A place to make friends?                                A building to maintain?

A place to eat and fellowship?                       A place to learn knowledge?

Christ’s business remains the same…

            Calling for repentance,

Repentance is the attitude that prepares us for grace

Grace is the opportunity to change, start over,

even though we have sinned.

A persons’ response to grace begins the journey of discipleship.

            Disciples follow Jesus’ invitation.

Jesus invitation, teaching, healing, and direct call.

To follow Christ’s teach, grow in faith, and in love of one another.

Sometime we fail and are called to repent.

And the circle continues

What does is its goal, our profit is measured

in how we are making disciples

We can be busy with much, but have no…

My grandmother’s church had 48 members in 1950

            38 in 1970       28 in 1980       18 in 1990      8 in 2000

And now it has four active members.

Is it making disciples? Should it be closed?

How do we, as the hands and feet, the active witness of Jesus:

            Make Disciples…

First, we have to claim the assurance that we, are disciples,

It is not just a historical term:

Second, we must claim the call Christ has on our own life.

Third, we share what we know, tell what we believe, love as Christ has love us.  WE CALL OTHERS to JOIN US.

Criticism from some

Fourth, we are not perfect in this journey, so we continue to extend grace to one another.

Fifth, we model repentance with one another.. and encourage one another closer to Christ.

The Church is not the building, not the steeple, is God’s people…

Who are not only following Christ for themselves, but

Those who are

Following the example of making disciples share the word

Share the work of grace.. that all would love & follow
